Erickson Living is one of the premier providers of continuing care retirement communities in the country, innovating in the fields of both hospitality and healthcare for more than 35 years, and currently serving 25,000 residents in 19 communities across 11 states.
In 2015, the company decided to upgrade new campuses’ access control systems with a wireless solution and no physical lock on the doors. Many security providers said it couldn’t be done; yet using the existing infrastructure, IST was able to navigate the logistics of wirelessly connecting several campuses, each with one million and a half square feet (smaller sizes excluded) and 1,500-2,400 residences. They completed the installation and configuration within three months.
“IST has a broad enough perspective that they bring that consultative aspect to really allow us to provide the best, most cost-effective solutions for our residents,” Hans Keller, CIO at Erickson Living said.
Overall, Erickson Living achieved a number of cost savings by harnessing extant infrastructure for higher tech security solutions. IST also helped strengthen security and cut time and costs by automating a manual night checking process with a lock and control system. Automating the night-check system saved innumerable man-hours too.
Keller described the relationship with IST as “more family member than partner. If somebody looks into that room, there’s really no delineation between an Erickson Living employee and one of our partners like IST. When we run into problems, what it actually shows is the strength of the relationship rather than a weakness.”
